Chelsea Square, Cheltenham

Chelsea Square was borne out of a neglected brownfield site in the centre of Cheltenham.

The centrepiece being Shaftesbury Hall, formerly a Victorian teaching college which had stood empty for many years and become very run down. The Hall was carefully resurrected and transformed into 31 smart apartments.

Complimenting the existing architecture of the Hall and designed to frame the space now known as Chelsea Square, Kingerlee then built a further 39 apartments and 14 townhouses all set within beautifully landscaped grounds.

As the new landscape took shape, this once neglected and forgotten corner of Cheltenham attracted the attention of the local Civic Society who twice commended the scheme; once for the refurbishment of Shaftesbury Hall and again for the development as a whole and the enhancement it gave to a built up area. Proof indeed that new build can comfortably sit side by side with period properties, if given careful thought to space, design and materials.
